Short answer: on your own driveway or private property in Reading, PA, you do not need a city permit for a rental dumpster. On a public street or alley, you do.
The street-placement rule
Per the most detailed public account available (Dumpster & Co.'s Reading guide), street or alley placement requires a City of Reading permit issued through Public Works, proof of liability insurance, and an application at least 48 hours before delivery. We have deliberately not published a permit fee: a secondary directory cites $5 per calendar day with a $25 minimum, but we could not verify that figure on the City's own site, and we don't print numbers we can't stand behind. Confirm the current fee with Public Works when you apply — or ask us to check when you book.
Rowhome reality
Reading's rowhome blocks are exactly where this matters: narrow streets, one-ways and cars parked bumper to bumper. If the box can't go on your property, plan the permit first and delivery second. Measure the approach, note the parking pattern on your block, and tell us both when you call.
Townships and HOAs
Outside the city, rules vary by township and some HOAs restrict visible containers or placement days. Driveway placement on your own property is the safe default almost everywhere in Berks County. More answers on our FAQ page.
Placement checklist
- Driveway clear of cars, roughly 60 ft of approach, 23–25 ft of overhead clearance
